When you want to do something consistently, the best thing to do is make it a habit. If you want to journal consistently you need to make it part of your daily routine.
A smart way to do this is to stack it on top of another habit. For example, if you enjoy having a coffee every morning you can utilise this time in the morning to journal. Including journaling at this time will be effective because it will be associated with something you enjoy.
If you do this consistently it will become a habit and you will begin to do it without having to force yourself.
I used to journal often but not consistently. Once I made it a part of my morning routine a few years ago I have been able to do it every day as it is now a habit.
Choose a Time and Stick To It:
Another way to journal consistently is to choose a dedicated time that works for you and your lifestyle. Think of a time each day when you will have at least 20 minutes to yourself. Is this in the morning while you are eating breakfast? Or is it at night before you go to bed?
There is no right or wrong time, it could be at 12 pm in the afternoon as long as it works for you that is what matters.
Once you have chosen this time, stick to it. This will make journaling consistently a lot easier as now you have carved out a specific time for it.
Decide How Long You Want To Journal For:
As I said earlier, there are no rules to journaling, the best way to do it is the way that works for you and your lifestyle. If that means you only spend 10 minutes every day journaling that is fine, it doesn’t have to be particularly long.
Also, the more you journal you will find that each day is different. Some days you will be writing for 10 minutes and on other days you will be writing for 30 minutes as you have a lot more on your mind. Just go with the flow and allow yourself to write what comes to your mind.
In the beginning, you could set a timer for 10 minutes and see how you get on. Or you could follow a ‘Journal with Me’ video on YouTube. These videos can be helpful in the beginning as they can give you a sense of community.
Be Flexible:
Journaling is a form of expression so you don’t need to be rigid about it. There are many different journaling styles and you may enjoy using more than one of them which is absolutely fine.
Some days you may just want to brain dump, other days you may want to go deeper and ask yourself questions using prompts.
Just allow yourself to be flexible, this way you are doing what is best for you and honouring how you feel in the moment.
Keep Your Journal Somewhere That Is Easy To Access:
When trying to journal consistently you want to make it as easy as possible. To do that you want to keep your journal somewhere that is easy to access. I like to keep mine on my desk, this way when I sit down to write it is there.
You could keep yours in your bedroom dresser drawer if you like to journal before bed, or you could keep it on the kitchen table if you like to journal in the morning after you eat breakfast.
Make Your Environment Comfortable:
When you sit down to journal you want to feel as comfortable as possible. Once you feel comfortable you will be able to write and release your thoughts without limitations.
I recommend lighting a candle and drinking your favourite beverage. You could also listen to some soothing music. I have gotten into Lofi music in the last year, it makes me feel very relaxed which is a great feeling to have when expressing yourself.
